Brazilian Jiu‐Jitsu (BJJ) is a highly effective self‐defense art specialising in ground fighting. It is designed to allow a smaller, weaker person to defend his or her self in a real-world situation that goes to the ground. Brazilian Jiu‐Jitsu does this by the detailed study of correct body mechanics, timing and placement. This is good for you the student because the methods are not based on strength or speed so the skills will not fade as will strength and speed. This is also in line with the self‐defense mindset of Brazilian Jiu‐Jitsu meaning you training should prepare you for a street encounter where you don’t get to choose what weight class you will be fighting in.

The self defense mindset is important because statistics show 90 to 95% of all violent attacks and street fights end up on the ground, where Brazilian Jiu‐Jitsu’s techniques are most highly effective. Unlike most sport biased Jiu‐Jitsu, our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not only studies grappling but also teaches the student how to deal with the opponent that tries to strike you in each position and how to effectively deal with it.

The physical benefits of training are incredible for the student. Most students experience a physical change in their bodies within 30 days of beginning their training. Students will lose weight and become leaner, gain useable strength, become more flexible and loosen the body. Many students experience lower levels of stress which leads to higher levels of day to day energy.

Founded by Grandmaster Helio Gracie, who at 135 pounds altered the techniques of traditional Jiu‐Jitsu to depend more on leverage and mechanical advantage over strength and speed. Our Jiu‐Jitsu program will teach you to use takedowns, hold downs, joint locks, strikes and chokes, to control and submit your opponent.

Upholding the premise that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are mitigated when grappling on the ground, Brazilian jiu‐jitsu emphasizes getting an opponent to the ground in order to utilize ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving striking, joint‐locks and chokeholds. A more precise way of describing this would be to say that on the ground, physical strength can be offset or enhanced by an experienced grappler who knows how to maximize force using mechanical strength rather than depending on pure physical strength.

Once the opponent is on the ground, a number of manoeuvres (and counter-manoeuvres) are available to manipulate the opponent into a suitable position for the application of a submission technique or striking. Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of the style, and includes effective use of the guard (a signature position of BJJ) position to defend oneself from bottom (using both submissions and sweeps, with sweeps leading to the possibility of dominant position or an opportunity to pass the guard), and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions.

This system of manoeuvring and manipulation can be likened to a form of physical chess when utilized by two experienced practitioners. A submission hold is the equivalent of checkmate in the sport, reflecting a disadvantage which would be extremely difficult to overcome in a fight (such as a dislocated joint or unconsciousness).

LPW founder Professor Chris Crossan is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt who traveled back and forth to Brazil between 2003-2005 to study under the expert tutorage of the legendary Gracie family. During this period Professor Chris amassed a wealth of experience regularly sparring with the worlds greatest Jiu-Jitsu competition. In doing so Professor Chris won numerous international gold medals. In 2018 Coach Chris was also awarded his 1st Degree Black Belt in BJJ under the legendary Sensei Erik Paulson, an honour he is very proud of.

Our  Brazilian Jiu‐Jitsu also includes training in standing self-defense against punching, kicking, grabs and holds as well as various weapons like the gun and knife. In addition to self‐defense, it is an incredible physical workout that will increase your strength and flexibility as it gets you in great shape.
